Description
These are needles of an albino redwood tree.
Yep, you read that correctly. This is part of an albino offshoot growing from the base of a normal green redwood tree in the hills right off the coast. This tree is a genetic anomaly, and what makes it's existence even more improbable is that it cannot survive without growing at the base of another redwood, an element key to its survival.
To be sure, seeing albino needles growing amidst a sea of green forest is a bit jarring at first, though upon closer examination you realize that other than its looks, the tree is the same as any other tree.
Yes, the needles do look white, or rather slightly yellowish. However, pay attention to your other senses. Close your eyes. The rustling wind gives no indication to the tree's lack of color when the branches sway. A broken piece smells crisp and sweet like any other bit of redwood. When touched, it feels like all redwood needles do, slightly waxy and resilient. I did not taste it, but the scent tells me this too likely just conveys normalcy.
What is special about this tree, then? Do we elevate this tree to a special position simply because it looks different than the rest? Do we focus on this tree for what it lacks or for how it thrives despite its differences? Is this tree what it is, or what it isn't? This is the question I leave for you.
