Description
I love this ancient pattern left in the sandstone. The wave is one of the most beautiful places on earth. I have been there several times and I am fascinated each time I photograph this mysterious and colorful place. It is located in the Coyote Bluffs Vermillion Cliffs wilderness area near Kanab, Utah north of Page Arizona. The striped, undulating slopes of “The Wave” resemble a stormy sea, with walls that look like clay suspended in motion. Some of the sandstone look like wood grain. Because of its popularity the Bureau of Land Management has limited foot traffic to 20 people per day with a required permit. Last year saw more than 48,000 people apply for just 7,300 permits to hike to the formation on a 6-mile round trip that begins in Utah and ends in Arizona. In 2013, three people died of heat exhaustion hiking the 6 mile round trip when they got lost. You need to be prepared when hiking into the desert, it can be a dangerous, and deadly place.
