Description
The texture of kelp is reminiscent of a macro closeup of a tongue, complete with miniature undulating bumps, ridges, endlessly intriguing topographies and of course, the requisite moisture.
Ever since I was young, picking up kelp off the beach and examining its surface with my fingers and eyes has been a passion of mine. The rubbery slickness, the moist elasticity, there was something about seaweed that fascinated me. The array of different colors of kelp that you can find on the shore tease you with their mind boggling diversity and prove too tantalizing to resist a closer look.
Once on a field trip to the beach with my class, my teacher, Mrs. Boone, mentioned to us that kelp is edible. She said some cultures consume seaweed regularly as food and shocked many of my classmates by listing it as an ingredient in toothpaste and some other foods we ate ourselves.
Being ever the curious kid, I located the closest piece of fresh red kelp about the size of a dollar bill and quickly rinsed it in the salty ocean water to clean off the crunchy sand. My fingers slipped over the surface and I folded it a bit. I put the whole slick, bumpy, moist thing in my mouth with no hesitation, and I ate it all.
