Description
The Gem
1615 E. 18th Street
Kansas City, Missouri
18th & Vine Historic District
The Gem was built in 1912 as a silent movie house, originally called The Star Theatre. The movie house was one of many that catered to the African-American community during segregation. It was renamed the Gem Theater in 1923 after its owners remodeled its exterior to give it more curb appeal. The Gem continued to serve as the neighborhood movie house well into the 1970s.
As a result of the Historic Jazz District Revitalization Plan, behind the restored 1912 facade, the Gem Theater houses a state-of-the-art 500-seat performing arts center which showcases both local and national jazz talents and is fully operational and serves as a host venue to the American Jazz Museum "Jammin' at the Gem" jazz series, the Negro League Baseball Museum's "Legacy Awards", and other public and private events.
