Samuel Insull. - 6 of 9 #sunday_feature The Civic Opera Building .
Samuel Insull made his money in the electricity and gas utilities. He was born in London England in 1859. By aged 19 he became a switch board operator for the London office of Edison telephone companies. He learned of a job in the US with Edison and by 21 he had emigrated to the US. As he grew older he took on more responsible jobs with Edison these included building power stations across the US, with others he later founded Edison General Electric which became GE. Unhappy that he was not named president he moved to Chicago as head of Chicago Edison Company. As I said earlier he financed 50% of the cost of building the Opera house, he also was very involved in the construction. He selected the Architects and changed the design to his tastes, there are also some electrical elements to the building one is the eye shaped windows at the top of the building, these are in reference to the "Electric Club" formally on this...
