Description
Metro North Mall
Kansas City, Missouri
Slated for demolition
Metro North Mall was the place to be for anyone who grew up in the Northland of Kansas City during the late 1970s through the mid 1990s. It was our playground, where we hung out with friends. Went on dates. Bought the newest Duran Duran cassette tape at Musicland. Grabbed an Orange Julius or a slice of pizza at Original Pizza, or if we were feeling upscale, a dinner at Kelso's. We watched balloons float up and down in the atrium. Sat in Santa's or the Easter Bunny's lap. We played Pac-Man and Donkey Kong in the arcade. We bought our LA Gear hightop sneakers, or acid washed jeans at JCPenney. So many memories here.
It is practically deserted, only septuagenarians walk it's almost 37 year old corridors now. Only 3 stores still remain open in this 1.3 million square foot mall that offered 129 storefronts at one point. It is the 2nd largest mall in the Kansas City metropolitan area.
I recently heard that the mall I spent a lot of time in from early childhood to high school was going to be torn down within the next year and rebuilt. It has been a dead mall for over a decade. For nostalgic reason, I went there today and snapped damn near 150 pictures (don't worry, I won't post then all.)
