Container Cult • “Technological developments towards ever more refined and automated production processes have drastically reduced the significance of the human factor within the manufacturing industries; the physical labourer has either migrated to the service industries or become specialised in the supervision of sensitive and complicated apparatus; a labour mannequin, to borrow one of the philosopher Jean Baudrillard’s phrases.
In other words, the underclass no longer consists of labourers in the accepted sense of the word. The defining characteristic of the new underclass is not its function either as raw material or as an expense for the enterprises of the dominant class, but rather as consumers of these enterprises. The main point here is not what the underclass produces, or even whether it produces anything at all, but, above all, what it consumes, and, even more importantly, the fact that it consumes at all.
