Autobiography One:

When you look at my artwork, you simply just don't look, you see.
Because the way the pieces are constructed, what's included and not included, what draws you into the image, especially when you combine all the pieces, all of the visual meanings, that make a larger whole, a meaning that may impact or persuade you heavily within the square or rectangle space. A small space can talk to you, and take you on a journey or adventure within.

Betsy Knapp has always been entangled with the Arts and Sciences. In 2011, she really found her stride, bringing both Science and Art together. She found that they worked perfectly with each other, yielding a synergistic team.
She received Science and Art degrees from Radford University and Virginia Tech. Along with University teaching English 101 and 102, Ecology English and Creative Writing, she gravitated to teaching Visual Arts.

Currently, through Photography and 3D Rendering, she has found her life's joy, specializing within the broad spectrum of Art and Science. She has put her different degrees to work--even a splash of VT studies in Animal Science, utilizing the array of higher education which has led her on a pathway to success.

You might ask: what is an example of intertwining Art and Science?

Picture yourself walking on a beach, the sand feels warm, there is a comforting breeze at your back, and you hear the waves as they tumble onto the shore. As you walk along, you see a chair close to the shore, and there's someone in it, but it's very peculiar because this person looks like a human, but something is really amiss. Upon further investigation, you approach the chair and with a perhaps fright of delight, you find a (medical grade) skeleton sitting in the chair.

This is strange, you think, what in the world is a skeleton doing sitting in a chair along the shoreline of a beach?

After you take multiple selfies, you still wonder, what the heck is going on?

Here is a short summary of bringing Science and Art together: We're still on the beach scratching our heads, wondering what in the world is going on here. Well, there is a lot going on here. Let's take a closer look and investigate and explore within this image. Let's first ask what our eyes are drawn to first with this image. And then from there--what are our eyes drawn to next? It's sort of like taking a journey or trip, but your journey or trip resides on a piece of paper or canvas.

Now, let's start with an array of analytical questions. What is the skeleton doing sitting in a chair at the beach? What direction is he or she looking? What kind of chair? What color? How or does that color or type of chair correspond or connect with the beach, with the skeleton? What position is the skeleton sitting in? What does the beach look like? What about the waves? We question all of the objects and subjects within the image.

Then we start interpreting the questions we asked. We now take our interpretations a step further and make visual connections which can lead to an emotional reaction or feeling.

Lastly, we entangle how we perceive and interpret the image by bringing the questions and pieces together. We think about how, what and why the image conveys a message or story. We ruminate, we take time to think about what we've thought or written about the image and come to conclusive thoughts or ideas that may provoke even more inquiries about the image--Who put the skeleton there and why? How long has the skeleton been there? Do the waves ever come up to his or her feet, letting the salt water and sand wash over the bones? What does the skeleton stand for on the beach? Is there a meaning? Yes, of course there is! You just need to do your own analysis and interpretation of the image. Combining the analysis and interpretation can lead to further thought, we like to call rumination, and from there we can conceive of a greater whole when we make connections within the image.

These are a few ways that the Visual Arts work. The image could be a photograph mixed with a 3D render, a composite image put together by the artist to send a message, to create a story, or to make a statement.

All of these aspects combined play into the picture of pricing. Other factors such as up-to-date cameras, camera supplies, tripods, graphics card, lenses, high quality Nvidia cards with computer software such as Photoshop, and 3D modeling programs--all of these combined aspects come at a great cost of time and money. Then we need to factor in the education, experience, and exploration with the image Creator, the one who composes and translates a meaning, whether it be through photography or a combination of photography and 3D rendering, the original formal education with all of these combined, the price of the image yielded and its meaning, interpreted through the buyer, justifies the cost of the quality, and enchanting, mystical, magical, entertaining, educational, storytelling, visual aesthetics, combined or use of perhaps two or three of the above aspects, they make a picture a story to be told for you to part of

Autobiography Two:

Betsy Cutler Knapp is a multi-genre full-time artist. Currently she lives and breathes photography and 3D rendering, which is a balance between traveling and lovingly logging-in time behind the computer screen.

One of her most identifying characteristics is her history with Topsail Island, North Carolina. She has been photographing the island for decades and often visits the quaint, magical paradise. She also finds Topsail's past fascinating, especially the military project, Operation Bumblebee, in the development of the ramjet engine.

As always, Betsy Knapp is graciously appreciative of guests, supporters, and clients, who have been a staple in her profession. Thank you! You are the reason she is able to provide new works for your evaluation! Her companions are a full-frame sensor camera and the highest quality hardware and software, which includes a Dell desktop, Nvidia Iray 3D rendering, professional monitors, Adobe Creative Suite, and more. Betsy is an MFA graduate from Virginia Tech. She was a consistent recipient of the Alfred Knobler Scholarship while attending the three-year Master of Fine Arts program in Creative Writing. She has taught College-Level English Composition and Research, Ecology Composition, and Creative Writing. She also has significant studies in Biology (BSc), Chemistry (Minor), and Animal Science.

Outside of photography, she is an active equestrian, with an emphasis in dressage and cross-country. Her current mount is a Standardbred named Buzz; he is a kind-hearted soul who is eager to please.
