Description
This watercolor painting by Marilyn Smith, titled "Mika, The Tamale Maker" resulted from an inspirational photograph taken by Hannah Smith. The photographer is currently teaching in Mexico and also learning the great Mexican customs and recipes. Hannah learned how to make these tamales from Mika, a member of her community, for the Day of The Dead celebrations.
*****************
In Hannah's words:
"In Ayotzinapan, Puebla, Mexico, Mika hand grinds la masa made from corn to begin making tamales. During Da de los Muertos, it is customary for families to celebrate by eating tamales filled with chicken, beans, salsa verde, salsa roja, or mole (a typical Mexican dish). The tamales are first formed by layering the masa with the ingredients that will fill them. The layers are then rolled into a long cylinder shape, and are sectioned off into chunks to form small balls. The balls are then flattened by hand, and rolled in banana leaves to be cooked over an open flame. Qu rico! "

I fell in love with the sunlight, the stone walls with all the tools at hand and the beautiful lady working so hard at her task. I knew the subject would make a great painting.
