Description
Update - while looking for information on St. Martin's Church I found that this is actually a Judensau, a German word for Jew's sow. It is a derogatory image found in many churches throughout Germany referencing the notion that pork is unclean, among other things, in the Jewish faith.
It is important to understand how historic places may reflect the feelings and emotions of time in which they were built. Learning from our past helps us be better stewards of our future. Not all practices from times past were in the best interest of all; I never would have known what this image was and how controversial it was, had I not learned part of the history of the church. An ironic symbol of hatred on a house of worship. It should be used as a reminder of the extreme hardships endured by people of the Jewish faith in this part of the world throughout the centuries.
