Witzel is an award-winning artist, writer, and photographer. A member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors and The Author's Guild, he is the author and photographer of over two dozen critically-acclaimed books about American pop culture, including the award-winning The American Gas Station: History and Folklore of the Gas Station in American Car Culture, The American Drive-In, The American Diner, The American Motel, Route 66 Remembered, Legendary Route 66: A Journey Through Time Along America's Mother Road, Barbecue Road Trip, and more. His writing, photography, and artwork has been published in Texas Highways, Motorhome, The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Mobilia, Check The Oil!, Rider Magazine, Route 66, the Society for Commercial Archeology Journal, Invention & Technology, and Volkswagen World.
