I began taking photographs in high school in the early 1980s. I had a 110 film camera that took square photos, and went on a camping trip to Big Bend National Park. This was spring break 1982. Went again the next year, same camera. That summer, my friends and I took a week-long summer vacation to Painted Desert, Petrified Forest, Grand Canyon (both rims), and Zion Canyon. That time, I had a 35mm film camera.
In 1988, my then-partner and I went to Cozumel. Took photos around the island, and a day trip to the Mayan ruins of Tulum, and Xel’Ha lagoon.
While I have printed photos from these early trips, I don’t have the negatives, and the prints weren’t cared for very well.
In 2004 I took a two week vacation to Italy. This time with a 5mp DSLR. Unfortunately, my camera was stolen the first day! It took three days to find a place to purchase a replacement. I missed out on Napoli, Salerno, Pompeii, Sorrento, and of course the photos I’d already taken at Piazza della Popolo and the Spanish Steps were lost with the camera. I did get photos of il Colosseo, and Fontana di Trevi in Roma.
I also took photographs in Firenze, Lucca, and Venezia. Only five hours in Venice meant I didn’t even get to Piazza San Marco. Merde!
What that means is at some point I need to return to the camping sites from my younger days, and return to Italia. Of course, if I go back to Italy, I may never leave…
