At each of the thirty miles between Fremont to Perrysburg there was a bar/hotel for the weary travelers Each was equipped with teams of oxen to pull wagons out of the deep muck. Summer was the best time for travel as some dry areas would occur. Windows and doors were kept open despite the swarms of mosquitos and other insects. The air was heavy with smoke from uncountable smudge pots to keep the malaria laden pests at bay.
