The African-American Civil War Memorial in Washington, D.C., commemorates the service of 209,145 African-American soldiers and sailors who fought for the Union in the American Civil War. The sculpture "The Spirit of Freedom" is a 9-foot bronze statue by Ed Hamilton of Louisville, Kentucky, and was completed in 1997. The full memorial depicts four soldiers, and this photograph is of two of those soldiers. "The Spirit of Freedom" is located near Howard University at U and 10th Streets, N.W., at the Cardoza Metro Station.
