Description
Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, is a 15th century Inca site located in the east Andes Mountains of Peru, in the Cusco Region approximately 50 miles northwest of Cusco, in the Sacred Valley. Hiram Bingham, in 1911, a Yale professor was the first Western scholar to discover the lost city, unknown by Perus Spanish conquerors, a fact which aided Machu Picchus isolation and preservation over the centuries.
The ruins lie on a high ridge, about 7,500 feet elevation, and consists of plazas, temples, terraces and home dwellings.Restoration work continues to this day. The site suffers from the pressures of too many tourists and preservation of the cultural and archaeological heritage is an ongoing concern. In 2011, entrance to the site was limited to 2,500 people per day.
The town at the base of the ruins is small and accessible mainly by train. All supplies for the residents and hotels are brought in via the trains and unloaded and hauled to the sites by manual labor.
