Description
Humpback whales are the species most commonly seen in Monterey Bay during the warm weather months. While a handful often linger throughout winter, most migrate to southern Mexican and Central American waters to give birth and mate. They begin arriving in good numbers from their wintering grounds in April and most are gone by the end of November.
Many consider this species to be the most charismatic of the baleen whales as they often engage in behavior such as breaching, pectoral fin slapping, tail lobbing, or lunge feeding.
