Oh Moon!
By: Harold G. Schoenthal (1926)
Oh moon ...
You peek around the corner of a tree
To peer through the small window of my room
And taunt my spirit, oh so sad and lone
With smiling face that seems to mock my doom.
Oh moon ...
Romance itself is trailing in the beams
Of your soft yellow light that would be warm
If only I, on such a night as this,
Had love ... If you'd a miracle perform.
Oh moon ...
At other times I've seen you in your course
And praised your beauteous light, now at its height,
Why, then, not bring my lover from far off,
And let us bask in your eternal light?
Oh moon ...
A thousand daily faces do I see,
I frequent most familiar places too,
Yet jostled by the elbows of a crowd,
I lead a hermit's life, yet long to woo.
Oh moon ...
Tonight your light has an unwonted glare
That seems to ferret out the weaknesses in man,
Your kindly sympathetic face
Has turned to one that's cynical and wan.
Oh moon ...
You are our nightly source of light,
As is the sun by day;
Keep shining and my loved one might
Come homeward soon, I pray.
