At almost 1 mile, Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the US and I believe the 9th deepest in the world. It's diameter is 7 miles and at it's deepest point the water is 60 degrees. Crater Lake is considered an active volcano with the possibility of explosion. But not in our lifetime or our children's lifetime. Wizard Island is not really an island at all, but a cinder cone. The only one of hundreds that reached the surface. Crater Lake was formerly known at Mt. Mazama before it blew its top 7,700 years ago. It's beauty cannot be captured in a picture, although it does give proof of its majesty.
